At a meeting with caretaker Prime Minister Madhav Nepal, President Rambaran Yadav on Saturday expressed concern over the absence of governance in Nepal and uncertainty regarding the selection of a new leader. Nepal, who had resigned on July 1, called on Yadav at the President's office on Saturday to brief him about the country's political scenario."The (caretaker) Prime Minister briefed the President about the contemporary politics and the initiative taken to form a consensus government," Rajendra Dahal, press advisor to the President told The Sunday Express.According to reports, the caretaker Prime Minister poured out his anger and frustration with various political parties, especially with Jhalnath Khanal — president of his own party, the Communist Party of Nepal-Unified Marxist Leninist (CPN-UML) — for not respecting the spirit of consensus.During the meeting, the President expressed his concern regarding the deteriorating law and order situation in the country. He also said that the measures being taken to meet the flood and drought situation in different parts of the country were inadequate. The President is believed to have warned Madhav Nepal prior to the latter's resignation of the likely fallout of his decision to step down. "You must be able to think about the outcome of a situation in which a majority government resigns and another is not formed," Yadav is said to have told Madhav Nepal. The Constituent Assembly has failed to elect a new Prime Minister through majority as the three main political parties — Unified Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist (UCPN-M), Nepali Congress and the CPN-UML — are divided over who they should support. As a result, on Wednesday and Friday, neither Maoist party leader Prachanda nor Nepali Congress leader Ramchandra Poudel were able to secure the minimum number of votes required to win.The House meets again on August 2 to elect a new leader.
