Fashion photographer Rohit Suri is enjoying his stint clicking millionairesFor someone who has caught over three decades of the Indian fashion industry in his camera, photographer and filmmaker Rohit Suri has no airs about him. Suri started work in the early 1980s when the big names in Indian fashion were Ritu Kumar and Rohit Khosla. Since then, the rather soft-spoken, salt and pepper haired lensman has come a long way. From photographing beauty pageants to celebrities like former US president Bill Clinton (on his visit to India) to fashion shoots for glossies like Vogue to the more recent spreads for Millionaire Asia, the photographer has been clicking incessantly. When Suri started his career as a photographer, there was not much respect accorded to the profession. All that has changed now. "The world of fashion is now limitless," says Suri, who was in town to speak to students of Fashionista Chandigarh at their institute in Manimajra. "I meet so many youngsters who are interested in photography and that wasn't so a few years ago. It's a healthy trend," adds Suri, who also mentors students at the National Institute of Fashion Technology. "I believe it's important to keep evolving. I have done everything from industrial photo shoots to corporate events, though essentially, I am a fashion photographer," he adds.Suri has also published coffee table books and dabbles as a filmmaker and music video director. As of now, he is making the most of his shoots for Millionaire Asia. "I am really enjoying clicking millionaires. The high-heeled have their own peculiar ways and it's a new ball game handling them," says the photographer who has a reputation of putting the most difficult person at ease. "I used to run photo labs too but for the last couple of years, I have been travelling around the world with my camera," says Suri who has been recently commissioned by the Embassy of Finland to come up with a book on the country. For someone who has been there and done all, there's still a project that Suri aims to accomplish before hanging up his boots. "The outside world sees the fashion industry as all glamour. I want to shoot and film a project that takes a behind the scenes look at the fashion industry," he says. Now that's worth a wait.
