Abhishek Bachchan in Raavan, Ranbir Kapoor in Rajneeti- as Bollywood continues its experiments with shades of gray, we ask film enthusiasts about their take on anti- heroesMilind Damle, film-makerI think today's actors are bold enough to take on such roles. Today, everyone, including the audience, has a different perception of how the hero should behave on screen - a song and dance around trees in rain is no longer a shot to fame. The phenomenon of small-budget movies taking over the box office has also contributed to the lead character having shades of gray. It's not only actors, even actresses are doing the same. A classic example is a movie like Ek Hasina Thi , where both Urmila Matondkar and Saif Ali Khan have heavy shades of gray woven into their characters.Digvijay Rohidas, actorThe practice of the anti-hero as a lead in Bollywood movies has been there since the '60s and the '70s. However, the younger generation doesn't know about movies of those years. For example, Amitabh Bachchan's role in Parwane is that of a dark character. Everybody has shades of gray; it is impossible to be a completely good person. Now the lead role-playing actor is someone with whom we all can associate ourselves . I think such a step by Bollywood is a good, positive one and will help the film industry tremendously in the long run.Kedar Awati, dean, FTIIPeople tend to forget movies like Deewar, where Amitabh Bachchan's character had a very strong negative role. Actually, Bollywood keeps on going through phases and is notorious for doing so - this is just one of many. Typically, great emotional upheavals like war, influence movies. This is just a temporary period.
